Merchant's Council of Trademeet
The Merchant’s Council of Trademeet was formed by Ferenir, son of Grethan, son of Hugor So’ren, in order to formalise and codify the trade rules so trade disputes could be fairly adjudicated.
So’ren has traditions established over about 3-4 generations of trader families. The power of these trading families derives from both their wealth, and business connections with the fey races of Trademeet. A group of the most powerful traders form the Trader’s Council, a subcommittee with powers of veto over the Trader’s Assembly, which includes the lesser families. The assembly makes decisions mostly regarding local common affairs.
Duke Lexin, of course, has veto over the council, but rarely uses it. Like his great grandfather, he realises that he can cede a lot of power over domestic problems, while retaining sovereignty, freeing him for some of the more important things in life. This power sharing arrangement is one of the reasons that So’ren is viewed with disdain by the other duchies, particularly given Menon’s doctrine regarding the divinity of autocratic rule.
